Week 2

It has definitely been a long ass week. And what has made it even longer is the fact that I missed out on two amazing concerts this past weekend. Yes, Omaha does get pretty bomb concerts every now and then (actually more often than that) and I have been totally fortunate to go to a ton of them. Unfortunately though, I was unable to attend Bon Iver and Phoenix, which were both here in the last 5 days. And I'm certain most of you have been listening to these bands for years, but in honor of the amazingness missed this weekend I dedicate this edition of WTF, it's only Wednesday to them.

I was introduced to Bon Iver back in 2007, when my roommate ordered his album from his website. I got the mail the day it came and was really confused when it read: "For Emma, Forever Ago." Seriously who was sending me an album? Thankfully she introduced him to me and the album has become one of my favorites. We haven't really heard much from Justin Vernon (aka-Bon Iver) since the release of For Emma, Forever Ago; except for the EP that dropped at the beginning of the year, "Blood Bank." But, seriously cut the guy some slack; he's been touring so much he hasn't been able to go back to his Wisconsin cabin to do anymore recording. I definitely forgive him, especially when his melodies are perfect for walking around campus on the cold first day of fall. Even though it cuts off at the end this video has some pretty great imagery for "Blood Bank."

I haven't been listening to Phoenix very long; I actually only have their third and fourth albums. But I think it's my new favorite love affair. Their newest album, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, is a stellar follow up to the third album. My favorite song on the album would have to be "Countdown." I feel like this is a song that will have the ability to have a different meaning for me at every age I listen to it. Right now, I think it's pretty impossible to peel off all of the layers of the lyrics. I really believe that as the years go on I'll be able to turn it on and understand it a little more. Either way, if you don't really want to dig deep into the lyrics, the melodies throughout the album are enough to keep you entertained for 35 minutes. So just close your eyes and listen.

Hopefully I will go to the next set of life changing concerts in the Lincoln/Omaha area and will be able to let you know how things sound in real life. Until then I will stay diligent in listening to the albums and depend on the ears of my cohorts to let me know how the live versions compare. Good luck with life.
